Lesson 5 - Plan vs. Layout Files

Plan Files- these are where you model the building(s) and details. If you’re a previous AutoCAD user then the easiest way to think of plan files is the model space.

Within the plan files, you can draw the walls, ceilings, rooflines, millwork, cabinetry, dimensions, labels, framing, etc.

Layout Files - these are the sheets that format the views from the model (plan file). These sheets will generally include some sort of title block and graphics that depict your design intent as modeled in the plan file. Within a Layout file you can have multiple pages, including a Master page (0), and use the Macro settings (we’ll go over this in Module 5) for drafting, and additional sheet labels.

Templates - you can build custom templates for both file types.
